The April Forecast: Rising Temps and Aggressive Pelagics

Last month set a high bar for consistency, but April is where the “magic” truly intensifies. We are currently seeing a steady climb in sea surface temperatures hovering around 75 degrees, which acts as a biological dinner bell for the region’s most sought-after trophy fish. This month marks the definitive arrival of more consistent pelagic runs. There are all kinds of pelagic fish out there for the taking.

What’s Hitting the Dock? The warmer thermoclines are bringing the Sailfish out in force. They are becoming increasingly aggressive, providing spectacular aerial displays for our charters. As we move further into March, we are seeing some incredible transitions in the water. Things are heating up (literally and figuratively), and if you’ve been waiting for the “big ones” to show up, your patience is about to pay off. The Secret Sauce: Bait Movement in Banderas Bay
One of the most surprising things newcomers notice is how quickly the “bait balls” can pop up. In the world of Banderas Bay fishing, finding the bait is 90% of the battle. During March, we see massive schools of diverse baitfish entering the bay and moving just offshore.

Here’s what we look for—water clarity, moon phases, and temperature—but the number one factor is bait movement. Everything’s gotta eat, and the big trophy fish are no exception. June marks the beginning of the rainy season (June 15 – October 15), but don’t let that fool you—this is when the fishing truly heats up. While some may assume rain slows things down, the opposite is true. The evening rains push baitfish into the bay, attracting massive pelagic predators. If you find bait movement, you’ll find fish—and June delivers some of the best action of the year.

Rains create a unique phenomenon where rivers flood, washing debris into the bay. This forms “trash lines”—where dark blue and off-colored water meet—that become hunting grounds for sailfish, mahi-mahi (dorado), and even marlin. Slow-trolling live bait along these lines is incredibly effective. When you see a fleet of boats working these areas, you know the bite is on!

Floating debris, including logs and vegetation, also creates artificial reefs that attract dorado, tuna, and smaller gamefish right in the bay. But if you’re after trophy-sized catches, offshore is where the real giants roam.

For the anglers that have visited here in April, you already know the fishing is excellent during this month. Let’s take a look at what we will be fishing for during the start of spring break in Nuevo Vallarta. The marlin will be here and the larger schools will be mostly offshore. The Blue marlin moves into our fishing grounds around this time of the year. We have more striped marlin than blue marlin. Some black marlin but this depends on the water temperature. The striped marlin is like the cooler water so we always keep an eye on the water temperatures and where the larger baits are schooling. There will be some mahi-mahi action mixed with the marlin action and always fun to catch. The dorados as they are called here in Mexico are some of the best eating you can find in the world.

Around the reefs and a few spots we have marked here on our GPS there will be the amberjack, grouper, snapper, bottom fish, and the always schooling yellowtail. There are few days that the fish will not bite here at these famous places we fish in April. The only problem we encounter is when we have strong currents. In April the sea is usually flat with no weather issues. When February rolls around here in Nuevo Vallarta I always like to look back and see what we’ve done over these last few winter months. December was full of rod-bending action with fantastic weather and we had pretty much the same in January. The pelagic fish definitely have hung around this winter. We had temperatures get down to about 63 degrees early in the morning and then get up to a perfect 76 in the afternoon. I still laugh sometimes driving to work and see all my friends and neighbor’s in jackets with 63 degrees weather. We’ve been seeing these temperatures for the last couple of weeks and we’ll see him the same in February. Let’s take a look at what we’ve been catching here in Nuevo Vallarta over these last few winter months and what we can expect to catch in February. mahi-mahi fishing nuevo vallarta

This February we will see some warm fishing, water (76 degrees) which is why we have held by the mahi- mahi and sailfish here in the area. We’ve had fantastic success with our eight-hour fishing charters offshore. The water has cooled down slightly and that slowed the blue and the black Marlin action, but has brought a tenfold in the striped Marlin. So if you’re coming in February which is a fantastic month to be here for fishing, snorkeling, just getting out and about in the city, whale watching, and sightseeing. This is one of the best months to be here. We’ve been seeing more and more baitfish show up. Like the skipjack tuna, google eye, Spanish mackerel, mahi -mahi, some roosterfish and a few of sailfish. This means only one thing. Game on the and the fishing will be good to steady action here inshore and offshore.

The offshore fishing is gonna remain the same until the end March. The winds pick up a little bit so we will change tactics just a bit. This will be very similar to the offshore fishing we offer here in Nuevo Vallarta. As I said, make sure you have plenty of live bait and be rigged up with plenty of black Bart lures. These fishing rigs are some of the best in Mexico. We’ve been running the black Barts on the short corner and then using some of our Joel Schultz tuna lures for the Marlin, sailfish, and mahi-mahi. This Labor day our fishing report starts off with more great news of what we had last month. The larger marlin, sailfish and mah-mahi have started to move into our fishing grounds here in Nuevo Vallarta. . The weather has been perfect with the minus passing of a few storms offshore. Not many people know September as one of the better months to fish in Nuevo Vallarta. First, there are less people here with school back in full swing in the United States and Mexico. Second, we have more bait that comes into our bay and offshore fishing area. If you read my fishing reports you will always here me talk about following the bait trail. If you are on the bait you will be on the fish. One of the last factors is it’s still summertime and the days are long. Sun comes up here in September at 7.30 am and sets about 8.30 p.m. Giving up plenty of daylight hrs. to hunt down any type of fish you may be looking for. September is a great month for dorados, sailfish,marlin,tuna and all the game fish you want to catch in the bay of Nuevo Vallarta. The bay fishing happens in Nuevo Vallarta to the south side of the bay. Here on the south side of the bay the Los Arcos,Qimixto,Los Animas and Yelapa are always good gashing in the month of September. If you are set up for all the fish we catch in the bay you might see some billfish behind your spread. Happens all the time so keep a sharp lookout on the short corner. The marlin and sailfish love to surprise us by taking a black bart lures of even a sewn-up mullet bait.

A little know fact is that the sailfish love this south side of the bay when the moon if full. There will half the fishermen that don’t like a full moon and the other half of the anglers love the full moon. I guess I have to be neutral on this point as I have had some incredible days on the full moon and some that have not been great days. Leave us a comment on the full moon debate down below.

The north side of the bay seems better for yellowtail,(sometimes schooling ) Spanish mackerel, skip jack tuna, mahi-mahi and some roosterfish. We depart from Nuevo some days and get lucky fishing the area of La Cruz all the way up to Punta Mita. The are several favorite fishing spots along this shore of the bay. Palo Verde in one of the best and you never know what will be biting around this knoll. I’ve seen snapper all the way to sailfish in September taking our baits along the beautiful beach area. Be sure and take extra bait in the part of the bay. You might find the fish schooling in this month of fishing here. This September we will be busy fishing offshore around Labor day. We will be fishing several offshore destinations like the El Morro. The Morro is known for it’s close proximity to Nuevo Vallarta located just outside the bay. The sailfish, marlin and mahi-mahi loves the area. This is just offshore and cab be done in an 8 hr. trip. This fishing area holds bait from the abundance of bait and reefs. The roosterfish and amberjack love to feed in this honey hole of a fishing spot. I’ve also landed huge marlin in September here . Fishing with small tuna or large bonitas of 5 to ten lbs. can produce some very productive fishing.

For the more adventurous angler we have the Corbetena and El Banco. These offshore trips are 10 to 14 hrs. The first Cortbetena hold marlin and tuna all year round. There is always bait there hence the fish congregate around the area depending on the water tempertures and water clarity. If you have the right tempertures and deep dark blue water. Watch out. The big fish will be there.

El Banco is about 50 miles offshore and holds everything you can fish for in the Pacific ocean. This is the mecca of fishing ground out of Nuevo Vallarta.
